MARCHWOOD
Hypothetical Old English 'merecewudu'='smallage (wild celery) wood' seems more likely than hypothetical 'Mierc(e)a wudu'='wood of Mercians'; but note the problem concerning the not far distant parish of FAWLEY. Smallage prefers wet ditches, usually near the sea; Marchwood is appropriately placed.

... at the distance of half a mile from the water-side [Beaulieu River], we came out again upon the intolerable heath, and went on for seven or eight miles over that heath, from the village of Beaulieu to that of Marchwood.
